Singing Resistance is building a mass movement of singers to protect and care for our communities in the face of rising authoritarianism. We are grounded in love, nonviolence, and solidarity.

What started in Minneapolis is now growing in communities across the country. Fort Worth is one of them.

Song is an antidote to fear. Song helps us connect to each other. Through song we can name and protect what we hold sacred.

No musical experience needed. No activist experience needed. Singing is our birthright, not a skill level.

Te invitamos.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO

  • NO KINGS 3

We led singing along the NO KINGS 3 march route in downtown Fort Worth, joining thousands across Texas in a day of connection, friendship and nonviolent resistance.

  • Shut Down Dilley campaign

Our chapter is working collaboratively to close the only family detention center (trailer prison) in the US, located six hours south in Dilley, Texas.

  • Caravan to Dilley

We joined other Texas Singing Resistance chapters to help plan a digital action and live, statewide caravan calling for DHS to shut down Dilley, close the camps, and release all kids and families. Learn more.

  • Vigil - Candles y Canto

Along with more than 70 other Singing Resistance chapters, we held a Day of Action event, a candlelight vigil at the Tarrant County Courthouse in solidarity with families harmed by ICE and our Tarrant County justice system.

WHY WE SING

Songs and singing together have the ability to deeply move us, open our hearts, and resource us. Singing has historically been a critical part of social movements globally — from freedom songs in South Africa's Anti-Apartheid Movement, to the Singing Revolution in Estonia, to the US Civil Rights movement with songs rooted in spirituals, folk, and gospel music. All of our ancestors sang. Song can help us reclaim practices that have been lost.

We sing songs that are simple, taught by ear, relevant to these times, and that communicate deep themes of grief, solidarity, love, resistance, and more. We sing not only for the world that we want to create, but to create that world right here and now. Singing with others offers us a path to feeling our grief, fear, connection, and power.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  1. We are building a large movement of singers that is radically welcoming. Singing Resistance is a loving entry point for many people, including those who are new to social movements and activism.
  2. In the context of rising authoritarianism, we believe we need a mass civil resistance movement that uses a diversity of tactics including noncooperation, protest, and mutual aid. We seek not to restore the broken democracy we had in place prior to an authoritarian regime taking power, but to build a true multiracial democracy and a new world in its place.
  3. We take regular action, grounded in solidarity and noncooperation. We protect ourselves and our neighbors, and we act in solidarity with members of our communities who are targeted by state violence (including ourselves).
  4. We sing not only for the world that we want to create, but to create that world right here and now. The embodied experience of singing offers us healing and supports our nervous systems and spirits.
  5. We sing songs that are simple, taught by ear, are relevant to these times, and that communicate deep themes of grief, solidarity, love, resistance, and more.
  6. We seek to end all oppressive systems. We are committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and integrating feedback in the places where we perpetuate oppressive behaviors.
